Coaching Youth Sports: Fundamentals

What: Interactive Learning Object

Purpose: Introductory guide for coaching youth sports

Target Audience: (New) youth sports coaches

Featured Tech Tools: Microsoft PowerPoint

REFLECTION

The interactive learning object was created using Microsoft PowerPoint and developed as a resource for new coaches of youth sports. Inspired by my own experience as a volunteer soccer coach, I wanted to offer a stand alone learning experience that explored aspects of coaching such as planning, communication skills, and promoting teamwork.

Within the project, learners (new coaches) must make it through their first “practice” despite obstacles that are thrown their way. Branching scenarios throughout the learning experience satisfy the second JMU graduate program objective by “creat[ing] conditions for learning by applying theories [...] to authentic scenarios involving diverse populations.” Additionally, this scenario-based learning approach serves as both a means to deliver content as well as assess learner understanding fulfilling AECT Standard 1 (Content Knowledge) and AECT Standard 4 (Professional Knowledge and Skills).

Graduate Program Objective 2: Create conditions for learning by applying theories (e.g. learning theories, curriculum theory and communications theories) to authentic scenarios involving diverse populations.

AECT Standard 1 (Content Knowledge): Candidates demonstrate the knowledge necessary to create, use, assess, and manage theoretical and practical applications of educational technologies and processes.

AECT Standard 4 (Professional Knowledge and Skills): Candidates design, develop, implement, and evaluate technology-rich learning environments within a supportive community of practice.
